In august 1915 britain was a regular proffecional army. By europe standards it was tiny!. The german dictator (or the kaiser) called this the contemptible little army. In 1908 the army had been completely reorganised and was now the most highly trained in europe. Normal british soldiers where now capable of fiering 30 rounds a miniute with their new lee enfield rifels, which where acurate at a range of more than a mile.
Britain did not need conscription from 1914-1916 because there where enough volenteers to last the army out. Also britain did not use concription because the government thought the war would be over by christmas.if the government bought conscription in during the first year or so the british public would have reasons to belive the war was going ot go on for more than 1 year, and might plan riots against the british government.
By 1916 the birtish government changed their mind about conscription because they knew the war would not be over soon and not enough volenteers where comeing up. Also the british govement where in need of winning war war fast so they would not starve.The military service act was a law which meant all men ages 18-41 would have to join the military service and fight.
Contiantious objectors apeared in britain for the first time in january 1916, when the military service act was passed. Contiantious objector means that a person is against the war and does not want to take part in it for various reasons such as relgious(these usually got jobs such as ambulance work), a reserved ocupation- which means a specific job that will help with the war effort such as mining and farming. Another form of contiantious objector is an absolutist. This ment that they did not want to take part in any part of the war and would refuse to do anything including helping with the ambulance work
